FAPA Canada

FAPA Canada or the Formosan Association for Public Affairs Canada is one of the Taiwanese non-profit organizations that have promoted the sovereignty of Taiwan in Canadian circles as well as on the international arena. Two other similar organizations existed around the world and these are the FAPA Europe and FAPA USA which along with the organization based in Canada promoted the sovereignty of Taiwan through different methods.

The Formosan Association for Public Affairs Canada existed ever since 1984, when it was established in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver as a chapter of FAPA USA. However, the association became independent of the American association in December 1993 as it was believed that in this way it will be able to deal better and more efficiently with the Canada-Taiwan relations. The Formosan Association for Public Affairs Canada was active in promoting different areas of democracy, human rights and freedom for the people of Taiwan. Once the goal of consolidating the democracy in the country, FAPA Canada switched its main focus towards promoting a better status and image of Taiwan on the international arena and within the international community as well as promoting the country’s sovereignty.

Nevertheless, the Formosan Association for Public Affairs Canada took different roles in promoting and cultivating a good relationship with the Canadian parliament. Also, the Taiwanese organization was active in encouraging increased cooperation between Canada and Taiwan, as well as it had encouraged economical and cultural exchanges. Nonetheless, the Formosan Association for Public Affairs Canada took its mission of informing policy makers and politicians about the desires of the Taiwanese people seriously. The members of the organization belonged to different yet broad age groups and they were mostly, although not exclusively, Taiwanese people or individuals who had an interest for the well being of the country. FAPA Canada worked in collaboration with FAPA Europe and FAPA USA in pursuing its aims.
