Sarkozy sells out democracy

For immediate release

Thursday, November 29, 2007, Mainz, Germany - The Formosan Association for Public Affairs Europe (FAPA Europe) condemned French President Nicolas Sarkozy for the anti-democratic remarks he made during his trip to China. Sarkozy stated that "Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory. France does not support the independence of Taiwan."

"President Sarkozy has sold out democracy and the right of Taiwanese to determine their own future by his remarks," stated Jenny Hsieh, spokesperson for FAPA Europe. "In doing so, he has broken his promise to support tolerance, freedom, democracy, humanism."

"If France wants to support human rights on the international stage, President Sarkozy must retract such remarks," added Hsieh. "Otherwise, it will be obvious that Sarkozy is willing to kowtow to a brutal dictatorship and acquiesce to human rights violations."

"President Sarkozy needs a reality check," remarked Professor Cheng Lee, researcher for FAPA Europe. "The fact is that the San Francisco Peace Treaty gives China no legal claim over Taiwan, and only the Taiwanese people have the sovereign right to decide their destiny as a nation."
