A New GermanyPublished November 21, 2007 in the International Herald Tribune Regarding the article "Germany examines a shift away from China" (Nov. 20): Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to refocus strategetic initiatives away from China and toward other nations in Asia is long overdue. A singular focus on the trade with China is risky and imprudent for Germany's economy. Diversifying trade with countries in Southeast Asia will safeguard Germany against possible slowdowns in the Chinese economy, which has been growing at an unsustainable pace. Furthermore, it is refreshing to see that Merkel has ended former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's continual appeasement of Beijing autocrats by reintroducing human rights and democratic principles into German foreign policy. Germany can further signal its commitment to the liberty and fundamental rights of all peoples by continuing to pressure for democratic reforms in China, Burma and North Korea. It should also seek to establish closer ties with democratic countries such as Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines. Its willingness meet with the Dalai Lama despite Chinese warnings is a clear sign that its foreign policy decisions are made in Berlin rather than Beijing. Human rights activists should be encouraged that Germany is once again a supporter of human rights and democracy on the international stage.
