Taiwan and Hong KongPublished June 25, 2007 in the International Herald Tribune Regarding "From freedom to facade" by Paul Harris (Views, June 22): Given the deterioration of fundamental freedoms for the residents of Hong Kong, it's no surprise why opinion polls on Taiwan show that an overwhelming majority of citizens reject the idea of unification with China. Taiwan, which has never been ruled by the People's Republic of China, is a shining example of a vibrant Asian democracy that respects the fundamental rights and liberties of its citizens. Unfortunately, the freedom that the Taiwanese people enjoy is under threat from China's bellicose military rhetoric, and China's continuing refusal to allow Taiwan's participation in the international community. Nations that truly value the development of democracy must stop kowtowing to Chinese autocrats, and start supporting Taiwan's inclusion on the international stage.
