[Insert Appropriate Greeting] This coming May, Taiwan will attempt to gain entry into the World Health Organisation (WHO). Such admittance is long overdue, and we hope you will support Taiwan's efforts wholeheartedly. The WHO Constitution enshrines the principle that the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being. Under this principle, the 23 million people of Taiwan, and 400,000 foreign nationals, including many [British/Irish] citizens residing on this island, should have the same rights. In the era of increasing globalisation, the exclusion of Taiwan from the WHO poses a large danger for everyone, including citizens of [the UK/Ireland]. We cannot afford to leave Taiwan out of the loop in combating the threats posed by epidemics. Global responses to infectious diseases need to be coordinated by all nations, as epidemic spread is not confined to national boundaries. For this reason, the European parliament passed resolution P6_TA(2006)0228 on May 18, 2006 supporting Taiwan's inclusion in the WHO and greater access to WHO resources. If the [UK/Irish] government is serious about promoting the fundamental rights of all people, then it must support the entry of Taiwan to the WHO at this year's World Health Assembly. Our government has long claimed that it promotes democratic ideals, fundamental rights and the freedom of all peoples on the international stage. In order to be consistent with these noble aims, we must fully support Taiwan's integration into the global health community. Sincerely, [Your name here] [Please include full address]
