[Dear ... greeting] During the United Nations General Assembly that will convene in September, we ask that the you fully support Taiwan's right to representation at the United Nations. Failure to do so will betray an unwillingness to support democratic ideas and human rights in the international arena. The People's Republic of China will continue to coerce and bribe nations to support its stance that Taiwan is not an independent country and that China has claims to the strategic island. Our government must oppose such claims and instead stand in support of freedom and democracy. The issue at hand is a matter of human rights. To ignore an entire country when it asks for equality, an equality that is a part of the foundation of the UN charter, is a violation of the principles upon which that world body was created. Human rights is at the centre of the Taiwan issue. This country of 23 million people has sought for its voice to be heard and respected, but the United Nations has continuously denied that goal. The UN is facing a time when its relevancy in the world is being examined, and when its point of existence is being questioned. Accepting Taiwan's application to the UN would send a strong message to its critics that the world body has not turned against its founding values. Recognizing the Taiwanese people's basic human rights of equality and expression will say to all member nations that the UN still embodies the spirit in which it was founded upon. We ask that you voice your support for the following: - The inclusion of the Taiwan question in the agenda - The endorsement of Taiwan's application for a seat in the UN - The full participation of Taiwan in the UN as an independent nation We live in a country of liberty and democracy. We should then also support free democratic states in other places of world. Taiwan is a country that cannot be ignored. Whether the issue is the spread of disease in East Asia, a potentially devastating conflict in the Taiwan Strait, or trade relations in Asia-Pacific, Taiwan's input must be recognized. It must be allowed to become a full and equal participant in the world community. We sincerely hope that you will support this cause. Sincerely yours, [Name, Address, Postal Code]
