[Insert Appropriate Greeting] I am writing to you with regards to Europe's antiquated one China policy. This policy should be repealed as soon as possible since it directly contradicts the European values of democracy, freedom, and respect for human rights. Thus I urge you to help oppose the one China policy and recognize Taiwan as a fully sovereign, independent nation. The differences between Taiwan and China are stark. Taiwan has evolved to become the most vibrant democracy in Asia, holding regular elections. The freedom of speech and freedom of the press are respected, and human rights are valued. Such behaviour should be rewarded by accepting Taiwan into the international community. China, on the other hand, remains a strict, totalitarian dictatorship that suppresses political dissidents, Tibetan and Uyghur activists, and Falun Dafa practitioners. It continues to censor the internet and refuses to apologize for the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989. Furthermore, it was China that covered up its SARS outbreak, with devastating consequences for the rest of the world. Why should such atrocious behaviour be rewarded by the European Union? Europe can show that it is serious about propagating democratic ideals by ignoring Chinese objections and establishing diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Without doing so, Europe cannot claim to support the spread of freedom and democracy. There are those that would argue that the one China policy allows Europe to engage China on human rights issues. I would say this policy of engagement is an utter failure. Engagement with China did not prevent the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, does not prevent the suppression of political dissent, and does not prevent censorship of the internet. This policy has failed to protect democracy activists and Falun Dafa practitioners. This policy has failed to prevent the military buildup of over 1000 missiles China aims at Taiwan, a country that aims to uphold peace. In any case, China has no legitimate claim over Taiwan anyway. The People's Republic of China has never, not even for a single day, ruled over Taiwan. In addition, the San Francisco Peace Treaty, the highest level international treaty regarding Taiwan's status, gives China no claim over Taiwan. Taiwan's status is a matter for the Taiwanese people to decide, in accordance with the United Nations charter that confirms a people's right to self-determination. I urge you to stand up for European principles in the face of irrational objections from Beijing. Please help to recognise the democratic achievements of Taiwan. Please help to recognize the right of the Taiwanese to determine their own future, free from military threats. Doing so will confirm your will to help democratic nations prosper and grow together. Sincerely, [Your name here] [Please include full address]
